The first Egg!

Last Monday the Chickens were 17 weeks old and I have been wondering when I might see their first Egg. Well, I found it as I was feeding them this morning! While they were eating the bread and feed I put out, I went around back to refill the water and when I opened the coop, THERE IT WAS!

It's the one on the right! Next to a store bough large Egg

It's kind of small, But I bet the Hen that laid it did not think so!

And here they are doing the Chicken thing.

The one under the coop is one of the "RIR" Could it be that this is a rooster? Only time will tell!

They seem to prefer the feed just dumped on the ground! Stupid Birds!

Not a Chicken! One of the Sunflowers with Wood Bees working hard to collect pollen.
When I go out to the coop I in the morning, I take Daisy with me and the first place she goes is the Chicken Coop. But this morning, She shot off the back deck like she was shot from a cannon! She saw two of the Birds outside  of the Chicken yard and she got "Up Close and Personal" with them!  I told her "NO" and she backed off and just watched them.
There are no holes in the fence and the gate was closed, So they had to have flew over the top to get out. But when I opened the gate and started to throw out the bread, They came right back in! I wonder if this is going to be an on going thing from now on? It's not really a problem, but they do not have anything close by to hide from winged predators out there! In the yard they can at least get under the coop or go inside until the danger passes.

Anyway, The first Egg is out and I hope that it is just a start of more Eggs in the future!

    1. Rae,
Thanks and the Girls say Thank you too! I could live with a treasure hunt every day! Now my question is, HOW MANY ROOS are in the group? They all seem to have their adult voices now, But no one has tried to crow yet. The two RIR's seems to be headed that way.

  4. I have a few girls myself and started getting eggs just a few months ago. It IS still so exciting to gather them everyday and doesn't get old at all. I just found your blog and enjoyed my visit. I'll be back and hoping for a good news update on the sweet little hound you saved. Congrats on your first egg!

    1. Brown Dog,
Welcome to my Blog and please do come back! I have wanted Chickens for so long and to get the very first Egg is so cool! Looking for them is half the fun!
As far as the Hound, We have named her "Annie", because I found her as a stray. She is doing well and spends half the day on my bed sleeping. She is part of the family now!

  5. YaY!!! and egg. Very exciting. I have one hen on 14 eggs right now and I hope they hatch. It will be my first time with baby chicks. I'll have to blow out that very first tiny egg I get from one of the chicks and keep it.

  6. Congratulations on your first of many eggs. You ought to clip their wings. Just one wing on each bird. Be careful not to cut the tip of the wing bone. Any pair of scissors will to the job. It makes them off balance. I have to clip my birds wings as I only have a 4 foot fence. Can you get close up pics of the birds? They are too far off to get a good look at their combs and tails. Great stuff, raising chickens.

    1. tea4too0,
I have read about clipping one wing. Today I cleaned the coop and put in new bedding and as I worked, I would look down and at my feet was one of the RIR's! The same bird did this twice, outside the fenced area!
This bird earned a new name today, PINHEAD!
      Silly Chicken!

  7. That's so wonderful! The first egg is always exciting. Let's hope you don't have more than one rooster - it would get a little too exciting in that coop.

    1. Susan,
Only the one so far! It is so hot that they spend all day under the coop. They got the first of some worms today. At first they did not show any interest, but as soon as one started, they all went crazy!
