The first Spring after moving here, The hardware store in town had a lot of starter plants for sale and I got some for our first garden. On July 4th week-end, they gave away the plants they still had, Mostly Tomatoes and Peppers.
But there was one plant there that was not going into the garden. It was small and near death and I took it to see if I could save it. It was put into a bigger pot with fresh potting soil and placed in the kitchen window.
I re-potted it to a hanging pot and it seemed to do better in that window. It doesn't grow vary fast, But the main branch got to the point where it kept falling into the kitchen sink! Its been in this window since last fall and that branch grew almost to the floor! So I wrapped it around itself and as you can see it is trying to get to the window again
I have no idea what it is and it has done something it has never done before!
Just three little pedals! This is on the end of the main branch and like I said, Its never done this before!
Does anybody know what it is? Sorry the pictures are so bad! Cheep Camera! GRRRRRRRR!
Am I a happy Daddy? You bet! :0)

Wandering jew? I think they have 3 petaled flowers...
ReplyDeleteI agree- it will root very easily if a piece breaks off-just stick it in water.
ReplyDeleteDannie,
DeleteLike I said to Rea, trying to get a cutting to root in water did not work. But thank you!
I have no idea of it's name but I have one ... mine is outside in a flower pot stuck in the ground. It is purple with pink flowers, I will have to look to see if I put the tag in the pot (old habit of mine). If not next time I am at the nursery I will look for the name.
ReplyDeleteI took Mama Pes suggestion and used google. It looks like I have A "Purple Hart Wondering Jew".
DeleteI really like this one and it seems to like the added humidity in the Bathroom!
Who knew?
Tom
It looks like a wandering jew to me too. If you pinch it back, it will sprout more from the ground and you will have a fuller plant. I never had one bloom so you must be doing something right :)
ReplyDeleteDenise,
DeleteWhen it was in the kitchen, I would water it when the branches would fall into the sink! But now that it is in the bathroom window, It gets the added humidity and seems to be growing faster!
Tom
I have no idea...I'm not good with most houseplants, so don't have to many. African Violets are about the only thing I usually can make grow...strangely enough. Cool that you got it to bloom, hopefully you can find out what it is. :)
ReplyDeleteDeb,
DeleteI normally do not have any luck with house plants ether! I have just one other one that has survied over the years. It came with My x-wife (#2). She had it for about 2 years befor that and I have had it now for 15 years (?).
It is some kind of tropical thingy. I will have to take pictures and see if any body can tell me what it is.
Tom
I've got to admit the blossom looks identical to a Wandering Jew blossom but your plant doesn't look much like the many Wandering Jew plants I've had over the year. Your plant's leaves and stems look much more succulent than those I'm familiar with. I wonder if you have a variety of Wandering Jew that I'm not familiar with? Google "Wandering Jew Blossom" and take a look at the plants on the sites there.
ReplyDeleteMama Pea,
DeleteGoogle had all sorts of info. And I think it is a "Purple Hart Wndering Jew"! The pictures I saw were of plants like mine. And I did not belive the number of differant types there are! As this one has done so well for me, I may have to keep my eyes open for some of the others!
Tom
Rea,
ReplyDeleteI tried that and this plant did not do a thing. The stemdied back to just ubder the first set of leaves. I stuck that into a pot of soil and will see if it will take off.
Thanks.
Tom
Hey Tom, I also used to have some sort of Wandering Jew. When the stem started getting too long, I would pinch off the end and stick it back in the pot in a "vacant" area, poking it down into the soil. Those pieces would almost always re-root themselves and make the plant fuller. Sounds like you are trying that so hope it works for you too. Sometimes it is hard to really care about plants that don't give you food. But I guess those house plants do help clean your indoor air ... so to speak.
ReplyDeleteI have "purple heart" growing outside near our a/c. Ad a few other places. We are a milder climate and it survives our winters. We always called it "wandering jew" growing up, but "purple heart" was a new name for it when we moved here (to TX)It sounds like your loves its spot in the bathroom.
