I'm a Chicken onwner!

Yes, My friends...I HAVE CHICKENS!!!!!!
And I'm doing the HAPPY DANCE!!!!!
Five Brown Leghorn's and One I'm not sure what she is, I just liked the color and markings!
And here are the first pictures:

Isn't she cute?

Sleepy baby after her long trip from the "Cackle Hatchery" in Lebanon, MO to Ahoskie, N.C. and then to my house!

And this is the one that they were not able to tell me what type it is. Can anyone tell me from the markings what she is. I may call this one "Odd Ball" as she is the odd one out.
I was told by ACE that they were going to get a shipment of "Easter Egger's" on the 16th of April. And I plan to get 6 of them too! And if all goes well, I will have Brown, Green, and Blue eggs sometime in September or October!
This first 6 have been on the top of my wish list ever sense I moved to the Homestead 4 years ago! And I dreamed about them for years before that!!
I want to thank "Bee Girl" and "Tool Lady" over at skymindedandevergrowing.blogspot.com for the inspiration for the brooder I built for the babies! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You so much! And the brooder looks like it will work really well for the new KIDS!
I just went to check on them upstairs and they are all sitting on the edge of the feeder with their heads inside, sound asleep!
Do I sound like a Proud Parent? Well, I AM! And not to sound to much like a little girl, They are so cute and I find myself wanting to go and just watch them and make sure that they are OK! When they are this little, I find that I worry about them if I can't see them! I guess that is part of being a new DAD!?
Now I have to get the coop build and soon! A couple years ago I got the instructions and plans for a coop off E-BAY that I think I will use. Mainly because it shows how to use Pallets for the main building material and I have lots of them laying around and they are the right price, FREE!
So, Susan, Leigh, Carolyn and all my other Blogging Friends who have listened to my Winning about wanting Chicks...
THEY ARE HERE!!
Oh HAPPY Day!!!
Tom

  1. How wonderful! You are now officially a homesteader - and rabbit/chicken farmer! They are the cutest things - my favorite stage is the gangly 'teenager' part where they still have bits of down sticking up through their feathers. Enjoy!

    1. Thanks Susan,
I was hopping that you would be one of the first to read the good news! I will be e-mailing you with a report on them each day until you get bored with it!
I have names for two of them already! "Odd Ball" for the one that is not a Leghorn and "Drupy", because she carries her wings so much closer to the ground then the rest of them.
      I'm a CHICKEN Man now!

    1. Rea,
Terri already has a bunch of pictures of them and as soon as she downloads them to my system, I will be putting them up. We even took pictures of me introducing them to Terri's dogs, Elly and Dodger. They though that the babies were some new treat for them, But we were able to calm them down and it seems that they understand that the chicks are not for eating!
At least the girls hope they do!

  3. Soooo happy for you! Chickens are addicting; I could watch them all day, every day and not get bored with them.
Have you had a talk with the little biddies yet about how the worm farm is NOT an all-you-can-eat breakfast bar??

    1. Carolyn,
I had not though of that! HA! But I did talk to the Worms and told them that they had to start sharing the kitchen scraps!
Did you know that Chickens and Worms both have Gizards and of course they both lay eggs!?
And neather of them have TEETH!
      Pretty cool!

  5. Congratulations, Chicken Farmer! Do take time right now to sit and watch them because they are going to grow so fast you simply won't believe it! You'll start seeing first feathers sprouting before you know it. Now go get busy and build that coop!

    1. Mama Pea,
Yep, the coop just got moved to the top of the list. First thing in the morning, I will have to mow the area where I want to put the new digs for them and start to pull pallets apart.
I spent more time today watching them and it's funny! They will be running around from one side of the brooder to the other and then they all fall a sleep! So Funny!

  6. Congrats!! I remember how much fun it was last year to have baby chicks peeping.
As for your mystery bird- we got a couple of mystery chicks last spring- they also had the 'chipmunk stripe' down the back and turned out to be Rhode Island Reds. They seem to be a frequent 'flyer' at farm stores- at least around here.

Have fun with your new ladies!

    1. Judy,
A Rhode Island Red? That's cool, I just liked the coloring of this one. Her Name is "Odd Ball" or "OB" for short. I hope that she turns into a he! And all the others will be hens!
After all, Eggs are what I really want.
To take them off the shopping list will be a big step in Growing My Own!

  7. Oh! they are TOO cute! Congrats on the new chicks! They sure are little bundles of joy, aren't they? Now, just don't forget to wipe their fluffy butts ;-) I'm glad that brooder is working out for you! The one with the stripe down it's back looks like our Ameraucanas...I'll be curious to see it when it feathers out :-)

    1. Bee Girl,
Yep, cute they are! Judy said that the "chipmunk" one might be a Rhode Island Red. It will be fun to see what she turns out to be!
Had to clean one "Fluffy Butt" this morning.
And I lost one this morning! Sad, But I knew it could happen.

    2. Sorry you lost one of your chicks, but I'm glad they replaced her right away. It sucks, but it's part of the cycle. Enjoy all the cheep, cheep, cheeping!
