Historical Sourdough Starter

The other day, I was reading "Judy's post (over at "Fullfreezer) about her day. And she said that she had found a Crock that would be just right for "Sourdough Starter" and I made a comment that I would like to to post about!

Surfing around the Internet one night, Looking for Sourdough Recipes, I found this Web site, Carsfriends.net. This is a group of people that are continuing the work that Carl .T. Griffith Did up until his death back in 2000.

And what was that work, you might ask? Preserving and feeding of the "1847 SOURDOUGH STARTER" that his family has used and kept active for the past 164 YEARS! Now one other thing that Carl did was to Give To Anyone Who Asked For The Starter, A Starter of their Own! How cool is that?

And there is a group of people (Carl'sfriends.net) who still  gives to anyone,  a dried portion of that starter that asks for it. And it's at no coast! All you have to do is send a SASE to one of the members and in a few weeks, You could be part A OF HISTORY!

I have learned that dried starter is "Self-Stabilizing" and can be placed into the freezer for up to a year. It can be Rehydrate at anytime and it will be ready to it's Sour thing!
I love bread, Especially Sourdough Bread! And I like to make bread at home. Ether in the bread machine (when pressed for time!) or with the "Kitchen Aid" mixer. Is there anything better that Home Made Bread right out of the oven, with lots of butter and maybe some Jam!?

So, I would suggest that you go to the web site and read Carl's story and get the address to get "Your Own Piece of History! I know I will!

  1. Thanks for this post! I had forgotten that I had some of his starter - freeze-dried - in my freezer! Of course, we are going to have to see pictures of your sourdough bread, you know.

    1. Susan,
Sure, pictures will be taken! Maybe Thursday, I will not have my truck (In for new tires!) and it is really wet out side. We had two days of rain and lots of standing water still.
So that would be a great day to bake bread. Maybe I will do one loaf in the Bread Machine and a couple with the Kitchen Aid?

  2. I am going to have to check out that site. Thanks for posting it. I have been making bread for a loooooooooong time and it is one "chore" I don't mind doing. I have been using a bread machine lately. Had to have some discs bolted together and it hurts some to do too much kneading. Hopefully I can get back into it someday.
    PS Thanks for visiting!

  5. I also am looking forward to seeing photos of your bread made two different ways. Wonder if there would be any difference and if so, why? I make our pizza dough in a bread machine. Might have to give this starter a try even though I am not usually a huge fan of sourdough bread. However, I do want to make Mama Pea's Italian bread for sure. I can tell by looking at her photos that this is our kind of bread, nice and crusty. Will check back later for bread photos.

I just got that starter you are talking about...haven't started using it yet, cause I got one of my own started...but I will have one of these days, and see if things taste different with it. So cool to see you are going to start using it too! :-))

    2. Tom I totally agree...the whole reason we first got Jersey cows is cause I wanted to make my own butter...cause there is not to much that is better than fresh butter slathered on homemade bread fresh out of the oven. Course DH had to talk me into them, which didn't happen till he got me interested in them for the butter and cheese I could make from their milk, but now I sure wouldn't want to be without them. :-))
